Sean “Diddy” Combs, the hip-hop mogul convicted on prostitution-related charges, is now seeking a pardon from former President Donald Trump.

His legal team has confirmed reaching out to the Trump administration, but the president has hinted reluctance due to past tensions. Here’s the latest on this high-profile plea for clemency.

Nicole Westmoreland, a member of Combs’ defense team, told CNN:

“It’s my understanding that we’ve reached out and had conversations in reference to a pardon.”

The move comes after Combs was convicted in July on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution but acquitted of more severe charges like sex trafficking and racketeering. Prosecutors had pushed for a four-to-five-year sentence, though the maximum penalty is 20 years.

Trump’s Hesitation Over the Pardon

Despite the legal team’s efforts, Trump has publicly expressed doubts. In a Newsmax interview, he stated:

“I was very friendly with him. I got along with him great. He seemed like a nice guy. But when I ran for office, he was very hostile.”

When asked if this meant a pardon was unlikely, Trump responded:

“I would say so, yeah.”

The president’s hesitation stems from Combs’ past criticism, including his endorsement of Joe Biden in 2020. However, sources suggest Trump is still “seriously considering” the request.

Combs remains in Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center after multiple bail denials. His legal team proposed a $50 million bond, but Judge Arun Subramanian rejected it, citing concerns over safety and flight risk.

His sentencing is set for October 3, with prosecutors pushing for a stricter penalty than initially expected. Meanwhile, Combs’ attorneys are preparing an appeal while holding out hope for a presidential pardon.

The case has drawn strong opinions. Rapper 50 Cent vowed to block any pardon, while some witnesses, like ex-girlfriend Gina Huynh, supported Combs’ release.

Westmoreland argued the prosecution overreached, telling CNN:

“If there was any real evidence of those [civil lawsuit] allegations, we would have heard all about it in the criminal trial.”
